General information about wheelchair accessible vehicles. Due to the nature of personalized needs, modifications can be very complicated and made with the individuals involved in mind. This means that initial financial layout will be quite a bit more. Motability may be able to help arrange a grant if you are unable to afford this higher initial layout. The size of a grant depends largely upon circumstances, both personal and financial. All of your initial payment may not be covered, and of course, you would need to contribute what you were able to afford. A free assessment is given by Motability when a grant is applied for a specially modified disabled vehicles. During the assessment, it will be determined what modifications you may need such as personalized controls and specific types of vehicles suitable to your needs. During this time, you will be advised on the most suitable modification options for you. A demonstration vehicle is usually introduced to help you get a feel of the vehicles, and how to get in and out of them. If the controls and anchoring are suitable at that time, a test drive may be in order. There will be at least one to two ‘fittings’, and specialized anchoring systems and controls will be outfitted into your vehicle dependent upon your needs. Most work will be carried out in a specialized shop that has the necessary tools at hand. Motability may even be able to provide transport at this time. For driving instruction, The Forum of Motability Centres has qualified instructors to help in operation of vehicles. It is unlikely that a test drive will be possible when first looking at a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles that allows a wheelchair bound person to drive, because of the specialized modifications needed. However, a feel for the size and specifications needed or desired will be possible during your demonstration. Our most significant bit of advice is to seriously consider trying out the different WAVs that may suit you. We can provide all of the factsheets, specifications, and various other information you may have outlined for your needs, but the only way to get a feel of a specific vehicle is to look over it and try one or more WAVs suitable for you.
