Definition of Disability

The definition of disability is generally extremely broad. Disability deals with cognitive or emotional impairment, as well as physical limitations. Any and all such limitations can fall under the definition of disability. A person’s physical restrictions when they are disabled may limit their abilities to participate in many forms of work. Similarly, emotional or psychological harm of many kinds may prevent an individual from performing duties at a place of employment. Emotional and psychological stress – whether inside the place of employment or at home – may affect an individual’s performance at work. Greater weight in recent decades has been placed on the work life balance and on the need for workers to be happy in order to perform well. Many employers have recognised this as well as workers themselves.

The definition of disability can be seen as a:

“person’s inability to do something that they would otherwise be capable of given their age, their social status and their cultural background”.

For example, a six month old baby would not be expected to stand and walk. He or she is not disabled. However, a twenty five year old man is likely to be able to do this.

Genetic or environmental conditions that affect the muscles can cause a disability. For example, motor neurone disease can cause muscles to waste away to a point where they are rendered useless. Parkinson’s Disease can also affect movement. Such diseases affect the central nervous system in a pernicious manner. Other illnesses that cause physical impairment can be caused by exposure to environmental factors, such as pesticides. Illnesses of many kinds may prevent a person from working in the way they have been doing for years before. Physical injuries can also prevent people from working.
