What is Disability

Disability is a broad umbrella term that encompasses anything that prevents or hinders an individual from performing a task. If you consider that an individual ought to be capable of a certain task given their socio cultural circumstances or expected ability at a given age, then you come some way to understanding what is disability.

Various environmental factors can result in a disability. These may be work related, such as the inhalation of asbestos fibres that affect the victim decades after the exposure, to a work related accident such as a trip or a fall. Repetitive strain injury can also occur at the workplace. This may be the result of heavy lifting or a similar task. Similar conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome can also affect a worker’s ability to perform certain tasks, making them incapable of carrying out their duties at work. This is unfortunate, because if an employee has been hired to perform specific duties, and they can no longer fulfil those duties, their qualifications may prevent them from being reassigned at the same company in another capacity. For example, an engineer who performs maintenance on machinery may not be best suited to reception or secretarial work if an injury prevents them from continuing to inspect and maintain machinery. Even if the engineer were retained in a consulting capacity, a dip in salary could also result in the reassigning of duties in this way.

Health and safety legislation in the work place is geared towards the prevention of work related injuries. Courses pertaining to heavy lifting and working at heights, for example, are often offered or made mandatory by employers who need to be compliant with the law. The definition of what is disability however, extends far beyond work related injuries. It also includes behavioural disorders and psychological disabilities of many kinds. 9th December 2011.
